Nana Badu Bonsu II

Paramount Chief of Upper Dixcove · A symbol of Ahanta resistance and remembrance

Nana Badu Bonsu II was the Omanhene of Upper Dixcove in the 1830s and one of the most enduring symbols of Ahanta resistance against colonial rule. After leading his people against Dutch forces in 1837–1838, he was executed and his head taken to the Netherlands — where it remained for 171 years before being repatriated to Ahanta in 2009.
